Transcaer® National and Regional Achievement Awards Recognize Rail & Chemical Companies, Nebraska and Pennsylvania Programs
ARLINGTON, VA (April 30, 2008) – The National TRANSCAER® Task Group today presented the 2007 TRANSCAER (Transportation Community Awareness and Emergency Response) National Achievement Awards to: BNSF Railway Company, CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern Corporation, The Dow Chemical Company and Union Pacific Railroad. In addition, the 2007 Regional Achievement Awards were presented to Nebraska TRANSCAER and Pennsylvania TRANSCAER.
TRANSCAER is the voluntary, nationwide outreach effort that helps communities prepare for and respond to possible hazardous material transportation incidents. Volunteers consist of representatives from chemical producers, distributors, carriers, first responders and government agencies.
Rollie Shook, CPP, Emergency Services and Security Senior Leader of The Dow Chemical Company and National TRANSCAER Task Group Chairman, explained that the National Achievement Awards recognize “extraordinary achievement in support of the TRANSCAER initiative that extends beyond the geographic boundaries of any one region. This award is recognized as a major symbol of commitment to the principles of TRANSCAER.”
Receiving the National Achievement Award signifies widespread recognition of the recipient’s dedication to this critical program. “The companies named this year have been leaders in training local emergency responders through a combination of hands-on activities and table top exercises and whistle-stop tours. They have brought crucial training directly to communities that might face hazmat issues and have enhanced preparation and planning across the nation,” Mr. Shook noted.
Similarly, the regional award winners demonstrated strong leadership in fulfilling the goals of TRANSCAER. The Nebraska TRANSCAER team, a leader in ethanol planning and preparedness, undertook extensive community outreach and training efforts including personal mentoring and support for communities in neighboring Iowa and Kansas. The team sponsored seven successful Ethanol Training Tours that reached some 560 emergency responders and plant loaders throughout the region.
Pennsylvania TRANSCAER (PATC) distinguished itself as a leader in preparedness by undertaking extensive community outreach and training at the county level. Last year, PATC was instrumental in sponsoring six critical emergency response exercises for county and local emergency responders throughout Pennsylvania. Further, the PATC provided opportunities for emergency response training and enhanced the capabilities of county Emergency Management Agencies and local emergency responders.
“We congratulate all our national and regional award recipients for helping to raise awareness in our communities and setting an example for all TRANSCAER participants,” Shook concluded.
TRANSCAER is sponsored by the American Chemistry Council, Association of American Railroads, Chemical Educational Foundation, CHEMTREC®, The Chlorine Institute, Inc., and National Tank Truck Carriers, Inc. For more information on TRANSCAER visit www.TRANSCAER.org.
