Overview

 

Training includes:

  • Classroom instruction and simulated hands-on training scenarios
  • Sulphur and sulphuric acid truck/tank trailer and tank cars on display for familiarization of components and operation
  • Lunch will be provided by The Sulphur Institute & Kansas City Southern
  • Certificates will be provided via email following event sign-in
  • Earn your TRANSCAER Challenge coin at the end of the session

You only need to register for one session. All topics are covered within each 7.5 hour session.

Classroom Sessions

Chemical and physical properties of molten Sulphur, sulphuric acid, hydrogen sulfide: An overview of molten sulphur, sulphuric acid, hydrogen sulfide, including its chemical and physical properties, placards, labels, containers, tank construction. Presented by: Chuck Simpson, EPIC Brokerage

Emergency Response (Highway, Rail, Maritime): An overview of response considerations for first responders and USCG members when responding to sulphur and sulphuric acid related incidents including truck spill, rail spill, sulphur fire, and maritime incidents. Presented by: Blair Hetherington, Chemtrade Logistics and Dan Somma, Marathon Petroleum

Railroad 101: Learn about railroad operations, hazards, and safety rules. Rail hazmat safety and emergency response procedures are reviewed. Presented by: BNSF Railway, Kansas City Southern, and Union Pacific Railroad

Field Exercises

Field Exercise 1 (Understanding Tank Cars):  Learn about the anatomy of general service and pressure tank cars including protective housings; tank components; safety appliances; jacket, shell, and head construction; placards and markings. Presented by: BNSF Railway, Kansas City Southern, and Union Pacific Railroad

Field Exercise 2 (Valves and Fittings):  Learn about potential leak scenarios for acid tank car valves and fittings and how to mitigate those leaks. Presented by: BNSF Railway, Kansas City Southern, and Union Pacific Railroad

Field Exercise 3 (Cargo Trailers): Conducted using a sulphuric acid trailer and a sulphur trailer provided onsite by Martin Sulfur. This training focuses on familiarization with various valves and fittings on cargo trailers, and potential leak points.

Drill Overview: First responders will have the opportunity to respond to several scenarios related to a sulphur fire and leaks from sulphur and sulphuric acid tank trucks and rail tank cars. The objective of the drills is to train first responders in taking the appropriate actions should they encounter a leak or fire from one of these conveyances. There will be facilitated discussion around selection of means of suppression, isolation of spill, and downwind evacuation distances will all be covered as part of this hands on drill.

Be at the site by 8:30 AM for registration, the training will begin promptly at 9:00AM. Depending on registration and training needs, the training schedule may be adjusted prior to event.
