Overview

This will be blended course where elements of Railroad 101 and Responding to Railroad Emergencies will be taught. This is an excellent opportunity for people who have little or no Railroad experience and those who have a more advanced background, to all gain valuable knowledge and skills. Each session will last 3 hours, and the course will be taught twice a day, each day. This will make for a shift friendly schedule for Fire and Police Departments, that may attend.

Description

Classroom Sessions:

This will be blended course where elements of Railroad 101 and Responding to Railroad Emergencies will be taught. Railroad 101:This is an introduction to Railroad Emergencies. Learn about railroad operations, hazards, and safety rules. Rail Hazmat safety and emergency response procedures are reviewed and discussed. Tank Car and Rail Car identification procedures will be shown. Basic overviews of valves and fittings will be discussed, with hands-on opportunities. 

 

Responding To Railroad Emergencies:Norfolk Southern is offering a new course designed to build upon our RR101 introductory training course. The new ‚ÄúResponding to Railroad Emergencies" will focus on the below topics and more: 

  • The D.E.C.I.D.E. Process:
  • 9 Stages of a Hazmat Emergency
  • Chemical and Physical Properties
  • Site Assessment & Safety
  • Tank Car/Container Assessment
  • Response Objectives & Tactics
  • Develop & Execute the Plan
  • Offensive Tactics
  • Tank Car Capping Kits

 

Important Details

Required Safety Gear: Safety Vest, Hard Hat / Fire Helmet, gloves, safety Glasses, long Pants, and Steel Toe or composite toe Boots.

Please advise the instructor(s) of any pre-existing medical condition(s) that may preclude you from participating in any field exercise. Stay hydrated and alert.

Be at the site by 8:30am for registration. Depending on registration and training needs, the training schedule may be adjusted prior to event.

Registration will remain open until after the event. Walk-ins are welcome to register on-site at the training event, however we strongly encourage pre-registration.
