Classroom Sessions
Case Studies: Overview of Union Pacific Railroad and BNSF Railway incidents and the response considerations for each.
Train Consist Overview: Learn how to read a train consist and the critical information that it will provide emergency responders during a response to an incident on the railroad.
AskRail® Mobile App: Learn about the AskRail smartphone app - a safety tool giving first responders immediate access to accurate, timely data about what type of hazardous materials a railcar is carrying.
Ammonia Properties & Emergency Response: An overview of anhydrous ammonia, including its chemical and physical properties, placards, labels, containers, tank construction, and the hazards and potential outcomes associated with an anhydrous ammonia incident. Presented by: Nutrien
Highway Incident Emergency Response: Explore the key elements of responding to hazardous materials incidents on highways, including scene size-up, vehicle identification, placarding, container types, and product hazards. This session will highlight tactical considerations, responder safety, and coordination with other agencies during highway emergencies involving commercial transport. Presented by: Quality Carriers
Hands-On Field Exercises
Field Exercise 1 (Flat Car– Fittings/Valves/Housing Overview): Conducted using UP’s flat car. This training focuses on familiarization with various valves and fittings within housings on pressure and general service tank cars.
Field Exercise 2 (Tank Car Build/Design/Identification/Field Assessment): Conducted using UP’s Tank Car. This training focuses on familiarization with the design and build of pressure and general service tank cars, how to identify the type of tank car, and how to conduct a field damage assessment.
Field Exercise 3 (ERK Workshop): Learn about potential leak scenarios for flammable gas tank car valves and fittings and how to mitigate those leaks. Install the Midland Emergency Response Kit on a typical flammable gas assembly.
Field Exercise 4 (DOT 407): Gain hands-on experience with highway cargo tankers by exploring potential leak scenarios and practicing emergency response shut-off procedures. This training emphasizes responder safety, equipment familiarization, and tactical mitigation strategies during highway hazardous materials incidents.
