Classroom Sessions:

- Ammonia Properties & Emergency Response: An overview of anhydrous ammonia, including its chemical and physical properties, placards, labels, containers, tank construction, and the hazards and potential outcomes associated with an anhydrous ammonia incident.
- Reactive Chemicals (Oxidizers & Monomers): An overview of reactive chemical hazards, with a focus on oxidizers and monomers, including their chemical and physical properties, common uses and transportation, labeling and identification, and the hazards and potential outcomes associated with uncontrolled reactions, fires, or polymerization incidents.
Field Exercises:
- Ammonia Drill: Live release ammonia drill for participants to practice and perform basic control and confinement operations, including tarp and cover. Decontamination and air monitoring will also be incorporated into the drill.
- Reactive Chemicals Demo - This live demonstration showcases several classes of reactive chemicals, giving participants a real-world perspective on their behavior under emergency conditions. Field demonstrations highlight the unpredictability of these materials, the rapid speed of chemical reactions, and the significant energy that can be released during an incident. This reinforces critical hazard recognition and response considerations for safely managing reactive chemical events.
