Description
Classroom Session
Highway cargo tank incidents present unique challenges that demand specialized knowledge and practical skills. This 3-hour pilot course combines focused classroom instruction with realistic, hands-on training using TRANSCAER's new Highway Tanker Simulator. Designed to replicate a variety of hazardous materials emergencies, the simulator allows responders to safely practice tactics in a controlled environment, including dome leaks, product releases, tanker roll-overs, and other transportation emergency scenarios. Participants will review cargo tank construction and components, incident size-up, hazard recognition, product control considerations, and response priorities before applying those concepts during interactive practical exercises. This course is designed for firefighters, hazardous materials responders, emergency management personnel, and others responsible for responding to hazardous materials transportation incidents.
Learning objectives:
- Differentiate among major DOT cargo tank specifications and identify the commodities commonly transported in each.
- Identify major cargo tank components, including valves, fittings, and safety devices, and explain their purpose and function.
- Conduct an effective size-up of highway cargo tank incidents by recognizing transportation hazards, common leak points, and damage that may compromise cargo tank integrity.
- Select appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and develop safe tactical response options based on cargo tank design, product hazards, and incident conditions.
- Coordinate safely and effectively with carriers, industry technical specialists, and other response partners during cargo tank emergencies.
- Apply response strategies and decision-making skills during realistic, hands-on cargo tank incident scenarios.
