Description
When a hazardous materials release occurs in a railroad environment, first responders must quickly assess the situation, establish communication with railroad representatives, identify product hazards, and implement protective actions to protect responders, the public, and the environment. This hands-on training program provides firefighters and emergency responders with the knowledge and practical skills needed to safely respond to rail incidents involving hazardous materials.
Participants will work through a realistic railroad emergency response scenario involving a reported hazardous materials release in a rail yard. The exercise emphasizes incident command, coordination with railroad hazardous materials managers, scene assessment, air monitoring, hazard recognition, and response decision-making. Through a combination of facilitated discussions, equipment demonstrations, and hands-on skill stations, students will gain experience identifying tank car components, interpreting qualification markings, assessing damage and leaks, and applying leak mitigation and securement techniques.
The course features commodity-specific response considerations for products commonly transported by rail, while reinforcing railroad safety principles, Unified Command coordination, and responder safety throughout the incident lifecycle.
