Railroad 101: Learn about railroad operations, hazards and safety rules. Rail hazmat safety and emergency response procedures are reviewed.
Understanding Tank Cars: Learn about the anatomy of general service and pressure tank cars including protective housings; valves and fittings; truck components; safety appliances; jacket, shell and head construction; placards and markings.
C-Kit Workshop and Midland ERK: Learn about potential leak scenarios for pressure rail tank car valves and fittings and how to mitigate those leaks. Install the Emergency Kit on protective housings with valve arrangements.
Leak Mitigation Exercises: Respond to simulated emergency scenarios. Hazmat leaks are simulated using compressed air and water. Students apply knowledge gained from classroom sessions and workshops to demonstrate proficiency and successfully mitigate leaks.

Required Safety Gear for all Field
Hard hat, gloves, safety glasses and work boots with a defined heel. Please advise the instructor of any preexisting medical condition that may preclude participation in a field exercise.
How It Went
Fresno Fire Hazmat team members received UPRR lecture and hands on training. Training was focused around the 99% of the time NAR fix (close valve and tighten the plug). Training was well received.
